Wilmington Firefighters Shaving Heads to Fight Childhood Cancer

The event is scheduled for Saturday from 1-5 p.m. at Red Heat Tavern.

You may notice some of your local firefighters have a new look after this weekend. Even better? It's all for a good cause.

Several members of the Wilmington Fire Department will be shaving their heads this weekend for charity, as the firefighters union hosts an event for the St. Baldrick's Society.

The event is scheduled for Saturday from 1-5 p.m. at the recently opened Red Heat Tavern. There will be at least 15 firefighters participating and shaving their heads for the cause.

"We were aware that some other fire departments had hosted St. Baldricks events, and decided that it was a worthwhile cause, especially since we are aware that there are children in Wilmington that have battled and continue to battle cancer," said Russ Stering.

As of last week, firefighters had already raised close to $10,000 in advance of the St. Baldrick's event.

Stering said the event is important to firefighters for more reasons than just the money.

"Not only because it raises funds for a worthy cause in children's cancer research, but also because it is a show of solidarity and support for those children and families affected by cancer," said Stering.
