Police Pursuit Resulted in Crash on Route 93 North

Second accident impacted traffic further Tuesday afternoon.

Although the two left lanes of Route 93 North were reopened within 30 minutes Tuesday afternoon, traffic was impacted for some time during rush hour after two crashes in Andover.

A police pursuit, in which speeds reached 80 miles per hour and the suspect was "driving guardrail to guardrail," was called off by officers, but the motorist, a 67-year-old Malden man, struck a guardrail and was trapped inside the vehicle.

According to the Massachusetts State Police, the MSP received several reports of an erratic driver on the highway and attempted to stop the driver in the 2007 Mercury Milan. The motorist sped away, leading police on the brief chase.

That accident shut down the highway completely briefly as first-responders removed the driver and transported the person to the hospital. The Malden man's condition is unknown, according to Mass State Police.

A second crash occurred shortly after when a tractor-trailer unit hit a car, one exit away from the original crash.

Tuesday, 4:45 p.m. — A second car crash has impacted traffic on Route 93 North further, causing even more headaches during rush hour.

A tractor trailer unit reportedly struck a car in the area of Dascomb Road/Exit 42 around 4:30 p.m., shortly after the original accident that shut down Route 93N.

Tuesday, 4:30 p.m. — Just before 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, all lanes on Route 93 North were closed as public safety officials dealt with a serious crash as a result of a police pursuit.

Massachusetts State Police were reportedly pursuing a suspect on Route 93 North and had called off the chase when the crash occurred in the area of Exit 43/Route 133 in Andover.

The driver of the vehicle was trapped in the car with serious injuries. The fire department needed to use the Jaws of Life to extract the driver from the car.

A Medflight was requested for the driver, who was reportedly in traumatic cardiac arrest. The driver was brought to Lawrence General Hospital, where the Medflight was to land.

According to Fox 25 News in Boston, the car was partially under the guardrail, causing traffic problems on both sides of the highway.

Patch will have more details if they become available.
