Man Flees Crash, Arrested for OUI After Vehicle Catches Fire

The following information was supplied by the Wilmington Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

The following is an excerpt from the Wilmington Police log from Sunday, July 21, to Monday, July 22.

Sunday, July 21

12:43 a.m.: Wilmington Police located a vehicle that State Police were looking for earlier when sparks were flying from a truck. The driver was having an issue with his bumper and stopped at Mobil on the Run to secure it better.

2:38 p.m.: An officer requested a second car behind a Main Street plaza for four youths involved in Class D drug activity. All parties were provided with a ride by responsible parents.

3:04 p.m.: Residents on Taft Road reported that a large branch fell in his driveway, taken down multiple wires.

4:14 p.m.: Police received a call for an erratic ice cream truck operator on Middlesex Ave., but were unable to locate the truck on arrival.

5:18 p.m.: A man came up to an officer on Moore Street and said a woman told him she took the rest of her anti-depressant pills in a means to harm herself. She walked away from him and was last seen walking near Shawsheen School. Units located the woman and a male party on Shawsheen Ave. Officers arrested the male and transported the woman to a nearby hospital. Corey C. Leger, 22, of 1 Montbatten Road, Billerica, was arrested on two outstanding warrants and Possession of Class A drugs.

7:16 p.m.: The manager of a company on Burlington Ave. reported that a man was looking in vehicles and trying to take metal from dumpsters. The caller said the man was possibly intoxicated. Police did not find the man, but did locate a different man at the train station who was intoxicated. He was taken into protective custody.

Monday, July 22

6:01 a.m.: A Lowell man was summonsed for subsequent offense of operating with a suspended license and speeding after a traffic stop on Boutwell Street.

9:29 a.m.: An anonymous caller on Cunningham Street reported a man going through the recycling bins in the area and leaving items in the road.

1:22 p.m.: Dispatch received a report of a fire in a paper bailer on Andover Street. The Fire Department located a small paper fire, and the sprinklers did not activate. The fire was contained to one machine.

3:58 p.m.: Medical aid was requested for an unresponsive 24-year-old on Royal Street. An ambulance transported the man and CPR was started on him. A police lieutenant was notified to respond to the home.

4:31 p.m.: Police received a call for a hit and run accident on Lake Street, possibly involving a white pick up truck that hit another car and fled towards Shawsheen Ave. Shortly after the initial call, police received a call for a vehicle fire on Moore and Wedgewood Street involving a pick up truck. The truck on fire was confirmed to be the one involved in the hit and run. The driver from the scene of the vehicle fire was transported the hospital, and eventually arrested. James R. Landry, 57, of 27 Moore Street, Wilmington, was arrested and charged with operating under the influence of liquor, third offense, failure to keep right for an oncoming motor vehicle, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of personal injury, marked lanes violation, and vandalizing property.

8:46 p.m.: Calling from Shawsheen School, a resident reported that about minutes ago two younger men set off possibly a molotov cocktail or pipe bomb behind the dumpster in the parking lot, and were filming it. When confronted by the calling party, they left the area. Officers found no smoke, odor, or evidence of anything being set off.
