Mystic Valley Boys Soccer Wins Tourney Game

A victory for Mystic Valley in the first round of the MIAA Tourney!

It is a season of firsts for the Mystic Valley boys’ soccer team. The team is playing in their first year as a varsity squad. Even though they are a very young program they were able to post an extremely impressive 9-6-1 record.

As a result of their record they made the MIAA tourney and played their first game on Saturday. They started their post-season in fine style by shutting out Cristo Rey 1-0 on Saturday to make it into the Quarter Finals. It was a very exciting game. A large number of parents and students, including former alumni, traveled to Dorchester to cheer on the Eagles.

In the first half, the boys did a great job of controlling the ball and the pace of the game. They had several great shots on net that went just wide. Cristo Rey stood strong with some tough defensive play. At the beginning of the second half, the boys came out a little flat and it was Cristo Rey taking big shots but stand out goalie Ryan Keane did an excellent job in the net. It was in minute 17 that TJ Flaherty put a great cross just between the goalkeeper and Dino Bulic who headed the ball over the keeper into the goal. The fans and players went crazy but there was still a lot of game left to play.

Cristo Rey came out strong and desperately took every shot they could to tie the game up. The defensive play of the game came from Ryan Keane late in the half. Cristo Rey took a fantastic hard shot from the top of the 18 and Keane was somehow able to stretch himself halfway across the net to stop the shot and preserve the shutout and the win.

“The boys have played excellent soccer throughout the year, and have simply continued to improve as the season progressed” said Head Coach Carlos-Luis Brown after the game.

The Eagles are slated to play the number one tournament seed Georgetown at Georgetown Tuesday at 2:00.
