Wilmington Sons Of Italy Receive Humanitarian Award

      Tuesday  night  at the  WCTV studios, the Wilmington Sons  Of Italy were honored with the  IPOD  For Wounded Veterans  Humanitarian  Award. According to the chairman of the  organization and host of the  show IPODS FOR WOUNDED VETERANS, Paul  Cardello, this award is being  given to the  Sons of Italy for the outstanding work  the organization does on behalf of wounded veterans in the country. This is the third year that Sons of Italy have been involved in the project. According to  Kevin Caira, Past President of the  Sons  of Italy,the Sons of Italy became involved in order to help returning wounded vets  from Iraq and Afghanistan, re-adjust after being  wounded many with  body altering wounds.Mr Caira stated that the most moving experience in all this was when he received calls from vets from Walter Reed Army Hospital  in Washington D.C, thanking him for the  IPODS and stating how much the  IPOD has helped in there adjustment and healing.
     The Sons of Italy is a fraternal organization for men and women of Italian  heritage. One of the goals of the Sons Of Italy is philanthropic. To this end,the Wilmington Sons  Of Italy is very active in giving to the Wilmington community. Some of the projects the Sons of Italy have donated to are: the playgrounds at the North School and the Shawsheen School, uniforms for the Wilmington High School Band,uniforms for the Wilmington High School baseball team, hockey team, field hockey team, and track teams, and the new score board at the  new Alumnae Field.The Sons of Italy also  contribute to  the  "Relay for Life", the Alzheimer's Association, Cooley's Anemia research, and many many more charities  throughout the Wilmington area. They also  give out scholarships to both undergraduate and graduate students.
     That same night the  Sons of Italy were presented with a State House Proclamation, offered by State  Representative James Miceli ( D Wilmington and Tewksbury) honoring the Sons of Italy for their  great work. Present at the awards ceremony with the host and chairman of the IPODS for Wounded Veterans Paul  Cardello,  were Rep James  Miceli, Kevin Caira, past president of the  Sons of Italy, Bob Regan for the IPOD  for wounded veterans, Leonard  Malvone Trustee for the Sons of Italy, and Gerald  Pupa, Past president of the  Sons  of Italy
