Are Drugs a Problem in Wilmington?

Answer this week's Moms Talk Q&A question.

Moms Talk is a new feature on Wilmington Patch that is part of a new initiative on our Patch sites to reach out to moms and families.

Wilmington Patch invites you and your circle of friends to help build a community of support for mothers and their families right here in Wilmington.

Each week in Moms Talk, our Moms Council of smart moms take your questions, give advice and share solutions.

Moms, dads, grandparents and the diverse families who make up our community will have a new resource for questions about local neighborhood schools, the best pediatricians, 24-hour pharmacies and the thousands of other issues that arise while raising children.

Moms Talk will also be the place to drop in for a talk about the latest parenting hot topic. Do you know of local moms raising their children in the Tiger Mother's way and is it the best way? Where can we get information on local flu shot clinics for children? How do we talk to our children about the Tucson shootings? How can we help our children's schools weather their budget cutbacks?

So grab a cup of coffee and settle in as we start the conversation today with a question from Wilmington Patch's Mom Council:

The Story

Last week, Wilmington Patch brought you that could have reached about $70,000 in street value. in a location within about 500 feet of West Street. This was the first drug bust of this size in quite some time in town, but each week there is usually at least one drug-related incident in the police logs.

Our Question

Does the discovery of marijuana highlight a bigger issue in Wilmington, or was that an isolated incident? Where do you think Wilmington ranks with towns similar in size as far as drug issues?

We welcome you to answer the question or ask the Moms Council another parenting question in the comments section.

Based on the number of school age kids that are getting high on a daily basis, I do believe that Wilmington has a problem with marijuana. It is outrageous how many kids have access to this and how many parents have no idea that their children are indulging!

I'd worry more about the heroin your kids are on. Wilmington and Billerica is infested with dope.

Dope kills. Weeds legal now not much we can do about that. Its the fact that wilmington high chemistry teachers broke down the steps to making heroin & crystal meth that bothers me & id know because I was in that class at the time

Please Do not tell me Some moronic Chemistry teacher at the High school broke down the steps to make heroin and Meth. If this is true 1st that teacher needs to be spoken to up close and very personal , and 2) some on should tell heim there are many substance that utilize chemistry, that are a boon to Human kind. Im sorry but if this is true that teacher is a fool

If this is true Lennie,(I tend to believe it is and I bet i can guess the teacher's name) people voted for a new school instead of new teachers. Go figure.
Lennie Malvone July 03, 2012 at 11:31 PM
One has nothing to do with the other . That teacher is irresponsible and he was irresponsible in the old High School. I want to know if its a true story . becouse if it is then that teacher needs to explain his or her actions. Again I dont have the full story and May be MAtt can find out about it

Wilmington is no different than any other town in the area. Think about it, with DECRIMNALIZING (not legalizing) marijuana and for being one town away from two major drug cities being Lawrence and Lowell, believe me, it could be worse. Listen it is not up to the cops, teachers or any body else to teach our children to stay away from drugs. How about being a parent first and accepting some responsibilty for your own childs actions. Drugs have no boundries, no social class requirements and will tear your family apart no matter who you are if you let them. Just ask some parents from North Reading or Chelmsford they have a bigger drug problem than Wilmington could ever think about. Stop listening to some of these clowns who say the town is infested with drugs. It's 2012, just look at the rest of the country or the world for that matter and then ask if Wilmington fits that criteria. Are you afraid to go to the store at night in Wilmington, Do you see open crack and heroin dealing when you drive down Main Street to pick up a pizza? The answer is no. I am not blind to the fact that some individuals may use drugs in Wilmington but show me a city or town anywhere in the world that is completely clear of some kind of drug use or sales. Wilmington is a great town. It is a safe community and a great place to live and bring up kids even if some idiots may want you to believe it is a drug infested crime riddled town. Please just look around.

Thank you for encouraging people to look around Karen. This encouragement may prevent another child from being stuck with a needle. I don't know why you think someone is a clown for informing the community about a drug problem. Wouldn't a person that is in denial of the facts be more of a clown?

Look in a mirror Kevin

Just because Wilmington is a nice place to live does not mean we don't have a drug problem. Let me tell you we have a problem of the worse kind, because you don't see it right in front of your face. We don't see heroin or crack addicts on the streets because they are in our own homes. Our children are addicted to opiates. Wilmington is not immune to the drug problem that Tewksbury, Chelmford, N. Reading, Billerica....etc. How can we stop it?
