Wilmington Chamber Prepares For 9th Annual Half Marathon and 5K

Last year, 625 runners participated.

The Wilmington Chamber of Commerce will host Wilmington's 9th annual half marathon and 5K run or walk this Sunday, Sept. 22.

According to Nancy Vallee, Executive Director of the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, there are several changes to the race this year, most notably a complete overhaul of the half marathon course.

The half marathon course begins and ends on Waltham Street this year, and is now completely in Wilmington instead of venturing into North Reading at points as in past years, according to Vallee.

"Runners will love the new course because it's a faster course, meaning less hills," Vallee said.

Wilmington students will be along the half marathon course with directional signs for runners, and as always residents are encouraged to spectate along the course and cheer on runners.

"If you're in the neighborhood during the race please go and cheer," Vallee said. "Feedback from runners is that Wilmington residents have always been awesome during the race."

The race will is also certified by USA Track and Field for the first time, according to Vallee, which adds credibility and allows runners to qualify for other races.

Last year, 625 runners registered, and pre-registration numbers this year are on par with last year, according to Vallee.

Registration for the half marathon is $25 through pre-registration and $30 the day of the race. 5K registration is $20 through pre-registration and $25 the day of the race.

Proceeds benefit scholarships for Wilmington students.

Online pre-registration closes at noon on Thursday, Sept. 19. You can find out how to register online here.

There will be a host of festivities in addition to the races, including a DJ, hotdogs, fruit, ice cream, face painting, a bouncy house as well as booths set up by 12 members of the Wilmington Chamber.
