What Are Wilmington Residents Thankful For?

Do you ever wonder what your neighbors are thinking? Well, here at Patch we love to hear what people in Wilmington are thinking.

Today, in honor of Thanksgiving, we thought it would be fun to talk to a few residents and share what, exactly, they are thankful for this year.

For many people here in town, family tops the list when it comes to Thanksgiving. Eileen Mota sums it up in one sentence, “I am thankful for my beautiful daughter's and my amazing husband.”

Former resident Patty Buckley Hersey added, “I am thankful for my two children. They are the two best things that ever happened to me.”

Sometimes, as Colleen Fox pointed out, it’s your mom that you need to be the most thankful for.

“I am very thankful for my wonderful family,” she explained. “I am also thankful for my amazing and wonderful mother. She stayed with my kids when I went to London and the additional days while I was delayed in London due to Hurricane Sandy. If it was not for her, I would never have been able to go London.”

Stacie Murphy said that she also has plenty of family to be thankful for.

“I am thankful for my caring and loving parents. I'm very grateful for a great family and terrific friends,” Murphy said. “I'm especially thankful for my super, fun, loving and smart nieces, nephews and godchildren. Without them my life wouldn't be complete.”

As Stephen Bowker pointed out, you simply can’t be thankful enough for the kind of support that family and friends can offer when times are tough.

“I am thankful for my family and friends who are fighting this battle against cancer with me,” he said. “The support, love, prayers and help offered to us has been overwhelming.”

Of course, when you are far away from home, sometimes it’s modern technology that’s important. Former resident Eileen Fenick might be 3,000 miles away on the west coast, but she’s still happy to be able to communicate with her family and friends daily.

“I am thankful for the internet. Yes it's true that these days some people are too connected to their wireless devices and have to be careful about letting personal relationships suffer. For me, however, the internet has allowed me to connect with friends from the past that I had lost contact with and at the same time stay connected with family and friends," she said. "I can view pictures online, have face to face visits on Skype and chat with family and friends as much as I want to. I can even feel like I've been shopping with a best friend back home after sending pictures back and forth of our new jeans and boots.”

As many of us here in Wilmington realize, community plays a huge role in our lives. As Jackie Rebeiro pointed out, “I am thankful for this wonderful community we get to bring our kids up in.”

In some cases, Thanksgiving is simply a chance to realize just how lucky we are.

“I am thankful that I have so many things to be thankful for,” JoMarie O’Mahoney said.
