Storm Center: Roads Remain Slick Leading to Accidents, New Snowfall Totals

Get your shovels ready, Wilmington. You're going to need them.

The first storm of 2014 is underway as the initial flakes began falling after midnight on Thursday. During the day on Thursday there will be some accumulation, though much of the snow will come Thursday night into Friday before the storm ends by Friday afternoon.

Below is what you need to know about this week's significant winter storm. We will be updating this storm center article throughout the storm, so be sure to check back throughout.

How much snow is Wilmington expected to get Thursday and Friday? The National Weather Service is projecting 13 inches of snow as of 9 a.m. on Friday. 

Poor Road Conditions

Wilmington Police have issued the following warning on road conditions via twitter on Friday morning:

"Roads are still very slippery and plow crews are still out working. Please avoid travel if possible."

Jan. 3 11:30 a.m.- Wilmington Police are reporting a three vehicle crash on Middlesex Avenue near the town common.

The crash involved two cars and one plow truck. All three vehicles have been moved to the Swain parking lot. 

Jan. 2 2:30 p.m.- Wilmington Police reported a crash in Burlington on Route 62 near the Wilmington line. Use caution if you're driving in that area.

Jan. 2 1:30 p.m.- Wilmington Police reported a minor two vehicle crash involving a snow plow on Lowell Street and West Street. 

Trash Pick Up

Trash pick up is running on Friday in Wilmington.

Town Buildings Closed Friday

Wilmington Town Hall, Wilmington Memorial Library, and the Senior Center will be closed on Friday to the inclement weather, according to Assistant Town Manager Kendra Amaral.

School Closed

In case you missed it, Wilmington Public Schools are closed for Thursday and Friday. Students will return to school on Monday. 

Public Meetings Cancelled

The Recreation Commission and Board of Health meetings scheduled for Thursday night have been cancelled due to the weather, according to the town website

Library Closing Early Thursday

Wilmington Memorial Library will close at 3 p.m. Thursday due to the inclement weather, according to their website.
