Community Fund Sponsors House Numbers Program

Find out how you can apply to receive house number from the Wilmington Community Fund.

The Wilmington Community Fund recently announced they would be providing free house numbers to residents without them in order to make addresses more visible around town.

Community Fund member Joan Searfoss said the housing numbers program is in line with previous projects the Community Fund has undertaken such as community-wide carbon monoxide detectors.

Searfoss said she came up with the idea, and pitched it to Wilmington Police Department Clerk Susan O'Neil.

"I wanted to see if they had anything else in mind, but [Wilmington Police] loved the house numbers idea because they said they'd be out on emergency calls and couldn't find an address when minutes count the most," Searfoss said.

Searfoss said she was unaware missing house numbers on Wilmington residences was such a prevalent issue until she reached out to the police department.

"I proposed it to public safety officials and said there was a definite need for it especially when time is of the essence when emergency is called," Searfoss said.

Searfoss said that since word came out in the last installment of Town Manager Jeff Hull's "Town Topics," the Community Fund has received much positive feedback about the program.

If you'd like to apply to receive free house numbers through the Community Fund program, fill out the form listed on the latest Town Topics and turn it in at Town Hall, Public Safety Building, Senior Center or Library.
