CHAMPS: Wilmington Earns District Title, Moves Into State Little League Bracket

Wilmington's Little League all-star team is one of just 16 remaining in the state.

For a group of Wilmington players, their summer of Little League will last a minimum of three more games. And if the results go their way this week, the local nine could keep things going for a bit longer.

Wilmington bested all of the competition in the District 13 tournament, earning the title with a victory on Saturday of Weston.

As a result, the team will compete at the end of this week in the Section 4 tournament, hoping to become one of the state's final four teams. As of right now, Wilmington is one of just 16 squads still playing at the 12-year-old all-star level.

In the District 13 tournament, Wilmington edged Acton-Boxboro by a 5-4 margin in the semifinal round. In the championship game, Wilmington clipped Weston to win the crown.

After advancing to the Section 4 portion of the state tournament, Wilmington will compete with District 14 winner North Andover American, District 15 champion Hamilton-Wenham, and District 16 winner Peabody Western.

Wilmington will play on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. versus North Andover, Thursday against Peabody Western at 5:30 p.m., and on Friday taking on Hamilton-Wenham at 7:30 p.m. All games will take place at Tewksbury's Poulin Field.

This portion of the tournament is round robin style. That means that the two teams with the best records at the end of the week will play for the Section 4 title on Saturday.

At that point, the remaining for teams will square off to determine who will represent Massachusetts in the New England tournament, which takes place in Bristol, Conn. The winner of the New England tournament plays in Williamsport, Penn., in the Little League World Series.
