Boston Marathon Memorial Exhibit Opens This Week

A memorial is on display from now through May 11 at the Boston Public Library displaying items left in Copley Square honoring the victims of last April’s Boston Marathon bombings.

Dear Boston: Messages from the Marathon Memorial is an exhibit of objects left at a the makeshift memorial on Boylston Street that came together in the hours, days, weeks and months following the bombings. People from around the world visited the scene of the tragedy leaving everything from flowers to posters to notes, T-shirts, hats, tokens and most of all running shoes to express their sorrow and strength in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings.

The memorial on Boylston Street came down in June and these objects left in support of all impacted by the events of Marathon Monday were transferred to the Boston City Archives. To mark the one year anniversary of the bombings, a selection of these items are being displayed allowing visitors to remember the outpouring of human compassion they represented following the tragedy.

The exhibit is on display at the Boston Public Library’s Central Library in Copley Square in the McKim Exhibition Hall from Monday April 7 through Sunday May 11.  

The Dear Boston exhibit is organized by a partnership with the Boston City Archives, Boston Art Commission, New England Museum Association, and Boston Public Library.
