Winchester Hospital Named No. 2 Place to Work in Massachusetts by The Boston Globe

Winchester Hospital has been named No. 2 in the largest employer category on the BostonGlobe’s Top Places to Work 2013 list. Winchester Hospital is the only hospital to be recognized in all six years of the program’s existence, earning placement in the top five each year. It also was the highest ranked health care organization this year.

The Globe Top Places to Work 2013, which was published in theSunday Boston Globe on Nov. 17, was conducted by employee survey firm WorkplaceDynamics. It measured more than 76,000 individuals’ responses to statements regarding six key factors related to employee happiness, including company direction, execution, employee connection, work load and responsibility, management, and pay and benefits.

Least important were pay, benefits and work-life balance, with survey subjects placing much higher importance on employee appreciation, confidence and feeling that their work is meaningful. WorkplaceDynamics also found that of all the cities surveyed, employees in Boston were most enthusiastic about their companies, making Boston the top of the Top Places to Work.

“This is a phenomenal accomplishment at a time when the health care environment is going through significant change,” said Kevin Smith, president and CEO of Winchester Hospital. “This achievement is a testament to the commitment from all our employees, physicians, board members and volunteers to continue to advance the health and care of our patients.”

“As our economy continues to heal, most of the benchmarks for progress are purely quantitative, such as increased pay rates and expanded benefits packages,” said Boston Globe Business Editor Mark Pothier. “While there is definite value in these indicators, many signs of recovery cannot be boiled down to pure economics. The companies on our Top Places to Work list foster productivity and innovation by investing in the happiness of their employees, which cannot solely be measured in dollars and cents.”

In June, Winchester Hospital was named to Boston Business Journal’s Best Places to Work in Massachusetts list in the large company category for the 11th year in a row. The hospital placed No. 8 this year, based on excellence in employee satisfaction, working conditions and company culture.

Also this year, Winchester Hospital was re-designated with Magnet® recognition for nursing excellence, becoming the first hospital in Massachusetts to earn this prestigious designation for the third time. Becker’s Hospital Review named Winchester Hospital to its annual list of 100 Great Places to Work in Healthcare in 2013, and for the sixth year in a row, the hospital received the Outstanding Patient Experience Award™ from HealthGrades®.
