Who Were the People of the Year in Wilmington?
Wilmington Patch wants to put together stories about the Person of the Year, Athlete of the Year and Teacher of the Year, and we need your nominations.
It was another year to remember in Wilmington, and there were plenty of people who made it that way.
But who stood out the most to you?
As the end of 2012 approaches, we want to compile stories on Wilmington's Person of the Year, Athlete of the Year, and Teacher of the Year. But we can't do it without your help.
Does Michael Caira's final year as Town Manager make him worthy of a Person of the Year story? Lou Cimaglia's efforts for local veterans? She we pick one of the Women of Wilmington or other local volunteers for their support of the town?
And on the fields, ice and courts, who was tops for the Wildcats? Did Drew Foley earn Athlete of the Year honors for his efforts in goal for the hockey team and his play on the pitch for the boys soccer team? Was Holly Niemiec or Alex Bischoff worthy after leading the girls soccer team on a historic run? Did Emily Crannell earn the nod thanks to her softball and basketball performances?
For Teacher of the Year, there are countless options. At every school in town there are educators pouring their efforts into improving the lives of the students who will be Wilmington's future.
The names above are just a few examples of who could be considered. But there are plenty of others.
So in all three categories, we want to hear from you. Make your nominations for Person of the Year, Athlete of the Year and Teacher of the Year in the comments section below.
You can also make your selection by e-mailing Local Editor Matt Schooley. Don't forget to not only tell us why you made the selection, but also what makes them so special.
Check back in the upcoming weeks to see who Wilmington selected, and what makes them so special.

Person of the year..... Craig Benard. Very helpful, inspirational, positive leader to look up to in life. Willing to help anyone in need while doing little for himself. He's earned person of the year in my book, with many people to agree with me.

Person of the Year: Paul Cardello, for his Ipods For Wounded Veterans organization. Paul and his group visit the most severely injured vets at the military hospitals in Virginia 3 times a year, bringing them iPods, and making personal visits with the vets and their families.

I agree with webmom. Kevin is like having a toothache. If you have it long enough eventually you will miss it. I am waiting for him to take his act on the road. Thank you Kevin.

For its Person of the Year, Time Magazine has picked heroes and villians, leaving the readers to determine for themselves which way to characterized them.
For that reason, for 2012 I would select Mr MacDonald without hesitation.
