Whispering Pines, Warrant Articles and Tragedy Strikes Again

A look at the week that was in Wilmington.

Monday night, the Board of Selectmen opened the week with a meeting that lasted about two hours in .

, a housing development that was approved for residents 55 years old and above. Now, with sales difficult to come by, the owners are asking for some flexibility in the restriction in order to fill the remaining units.

“We’re not alone,” said Kristen Costa, one of two people from Whispering Pines to speak to board members. “It’s across the state that over-55 projects have run into the same problems we have. Many have lifted the restriction or removed it completely.”

Selectmen said they appreciated the group keeping them abreast of their appeal process, even though board members were not voting on anything related to the topic. The Board of Appeals will make its final decision on March 9.

Also at the meeting, Town Manager Michael Caira unveiled a list of the proposed petitioned warrant articles for April’s Annual Town Meeting. .

On Thursday, a keynote speaker came to the library to kick off the festivities as a Harvard professor spoke about food choices and how they affect national food policy. 

Also on Thursday, a for the . Tewksbury native Edward Ruff was struck and killed by an oil tanker as he attempted to retrieve a hubcap from the median of I-93 North.

According to Massachusetts State Police, Ruff made it across four lanes of highway, returned safely through three lanes on his way back to his car, but was struck in the final lane.

On a lighter note, students put on a show Friday evening, . Performances included song, dance, juggling, and even a kazoo player.
