What Will Students Learn in P.E. With No Gymnasium?

Demolition is slated to take place at the high school over February vacation. So what will gym classes consist of for student?

The Wilmington High School gymnasium will be coming down over February vacation. So what exactly will students do with no gym to run around in?

That is one of the first questions many residents have, and for the answer we turn to the blog of WHS principal Eric Tracy. He provides some information in a blog post from Wednesday

Tracy said that for at least the next two years, Physical Education and health teachers will have to get creative, utilizing outdoor space when the weather allows and larger indoor rooms when it's raining, snowing or cold.

Health class will be taught during the first half of this semester while the P.E. portion will come second half in an effort to take advantage of warmer weather.

According to Tracy's blog, outdoor options include softball, football, capture the flag, aerobic walking, frisbee golf, field hockey, and others. When indoors, students can take yoga, Zumba, step aerobics, kick boxing, jump roping, weight training and more.

Tracy said the indoor classes will be able to take place in oversized classrooms and the cafeteria when it's not in use. Outdoor activities will take place on the ball field, Town Common, and possibly nearby sidewalks for aerobic activities.

"Kids will still be moving, sweating, and learning about ways to be more physically active," wrote Tracy. "In fact, many of the activities can be carried on into life. There can be no excuses for not getting off the couch!"

The biggest thing they will learn is the word DISRESPECT. Make no mistake, the selectmen have disrespected EVERY single student by this decision. I think it is even possible that the students have disrepected themselves by not letting their voices be heard and opposing this action. The students who choose to live in Wilmington will be paying for this misguided project for twenty-five years or more. IT IS TIME TO GET VOCAL CLASS OF 2013 and oppose this!!!!

The kids will learn you don't need a lot of space to stay active. Last week on the Biggest Loser, the trainer got the group moving with a deck of cards...each suit meant either situps or pushups, etc., and when you flip a card, that's how many you do. They were in a small room but got their biggest workout.

It's obviously not ideal, but you don't need a gym to stay physically fit. I hope they've found alternatives for the sports teams that would have relied on the gym for practice. As for disrespect, Kevin MacDonald, you have already taught a pretty big lesson in that by ignoring the will of the entire town and carrying on with your own personal mission. I'd like to think that even our kids aren't that selfish.

The class of 2013 is pretty vocal in favor of the high school, if you actually talk to some of us. If we chose to live in Wilmington, we might actually want our children to go to a nice school, and not the one we had to attend, which is falling apart and freezing half the time.
