VIDEO: Stanley Cup Champs Congratulate Wildcats
When asked about Wilmington's state championship run, Boston Bruins head coach Claude Julien said, "Everyone was cheering for them."
After Sunday, the Bruins aren't the only champions to skate on the ice of Ristuccia Arena.
The defending Stanley Cup winners practice in the local rink, which is also home to the Division 2 state champion Wilmington High School hockey team.
Following Monday's practice, players Brad Marchand, Gregory Campbell and Johnny Boychuck took the time to congratulate the Wildcats for their 3-2 win over Franklin on the Bruins' home ice of TD Garden.
Head coach Claude Julien talked about one connection between the two teams. RJ Townsend, the Wilmington team manager, helps out the Bruins trainers on occasion, and was the center of a friendly wager.
Boston assistant coach Doug Houda's son plays for Lynnfield, one of the teams the Wildcats knocked off in the Division 2 North tournament. Following the game, Houda had to serve Townsend a cup of Gatorade at the next practice.
"Now RJ can come in there and gloat that he's worked for a team that's won the Stanley Cup, and also worked the bench for a team that won the state championship at his high school," said Julien.
