Friday's Relay for Life event capped fundraising efforts that brought the Wilmington total to $125,000 for the year.

The number of participants was slightly down for this year's Relay for Life, but the amount of donations continues to amaze event organizers.

Friday night's event capped fundraising efforts for the year that raised $125,000 for the American Cancer Society. That brings Wilmington's total during the four years it's run the event to more than $500,000.

Participants walked throughout the night, participated in theme laps and listened to inspirational speakers.

“There are too many victims in this battle, and we have to keep the faith, stay strong and hope for cancer to be something from the past,” said featured speaker Tricia Lambert. “We cannot and will not let it get the best of us.”

It would really be great if the fight against cancer included a fight against the environmental disasters that contribute to cancer. I think of the abutter to the High School project whose wife died of cancer. The oil contamination is still in the ground at the High School and there is no intention of cleaning it up. I witnessed it. I would like to call on everyone to stop the disastrous High School proposal. Who in their right mind designs a drainage system that deposits water into an area where there was a known oil spill?

Writing as a cancer survivor, can't you simply congratulate all the participants in the Relay for Life for the wonderful job they did (and continue to do)? No. As with the case with the Local Heroes, you have to turn the spotlight toward yourself and your own personal agenda. I have gone from respecting your right to voice your opinion to agreeing with the vast majority of the town of Wilmington. Please stop typing and making a spectacle of yourself in any and all forums unless you have something constructive to say on the specific topic being discussed. Not sure if you do these things already, but maybe you could volunteer at Local Heroes, the Relay for Life, or any other charitable event to see how dedicated people really are supporting causes near and dear to their heart. People just might start to listen to you if you started to speak with your actions and not just your words...

Kevin, I am a big proponent of prevention. There are contaminants all around us (the air we breathe, the ground we walk on). Individuals choose the battles nearest to their heart (we can not individually battle them all). I also think some things are best left undisturbed, while others need to be remediated. That is left to the professionals among us. So if professionals say 'leave it untouched', we need to to agree, if they say 'clean it up', we should listen. Unless you are well versed in the subject, you have to trust professionals to do their job.

Kevin, Webmom brings up a great point. Where did you go to school and what is your degree in? Civil Engineering, Environmental Science? When did you pass your EIT and when did you get your PE? Where was the last site remediation that you worked on? Please let the people who have the education and training do their jobs.

Thank you for your opinion webmom. I have had people near and dear to me afflicted with cancer. My heart goes out to all those who have lost loved ones. Great progress is being made in medical advances and I thank God for that. I do believe that some people become apathetic to certain efforts to prevent cancer because it seems that every day we hear something causes cancer or this or that prevents cancer so the discussion turns into a joke. Cancer is no joke! I am all for prevention and finding a cure.
There are people who want to call themselves professionals who often times are no more than professional hacks. If professionals are saying leave it untouched then we should not be knocking down a 20-30 million dollar structurally sound building that is capping and containing the oil. One officials says that the oil has been remediated, another says it's not there, another says that it's o.k. leave it and dump drainage into it. I am telling you that I recovered the oil when it was gushing out of the ground and it is in a laboratory collection vial at the police station evidence room. This is no joke. Oil floats on water and often times it has additives in it that when inundated with water becomes a threat. Don't let them deceive you. You need to understand that one of the appellants is a professional environmentalist- a licensed site professional(L.S.P).

McDonald, you self important arse. You are are one trick pony and a complete blowhard. I normally try to ignore your repetitive rantings and idiotic comments, however as someone who is currently battling cancer I could not ignore this. My daughter participated in the Relay and raised over $1000. She and the other participants gave up time and energy to help support this cause. Instead of a simple "congratulations" or a "job well done" from you, you resort to taking a positive article and injecting your own twisted spin. Please leave your rantings to the appropriate forum and let the people who do good deeds in this town get a little bit of recognition. I'm sur eyou will respond with more of your tired old rant. there is no reasoning with an insane person...

As a Spouse Of a person who at this moment is dealing with Stage 4 Cancer with metastisis I find that a simple congratulations to the participents who walked their hearts out for friends and loved ones either afflicted with this dread disease or worse lost the battle to it is in order. Any postings on cause and effect very much inappropriate especially from a person who is not qualified to make that statement. To all the walkers who braved the night the cold and the bugs Espically those who walked in Honor of My loved one from the bottom of my heart I Thank you
