Tyler Seguin Beats Santa to the Punch

Bruins star forward brings gifts to Mikey Murphy's family.

Santa Claus is coming to town on Saturday night. But on Thursday, Tyler Seguin was the one delivering gifts to one Wilmington family.

The Boston Bruins young star visited the home of Mikey Murphy, who remains hospitalized following his collapse over the summer on his way to the Bruins Stanley Cup parade. Seguin came with gifts for the Murphy family, who spends much of its time in Boston with Mikey.

Though Mikey wasn't home at the time, several family members were thrilled with Seguin's appearance.

The fast skating NHL forward even had the chance to reunite the Murphy family dog. His name? You guessed it. Seguin. The pair met at Ristuccia Arena when the four-legged version was a puppy, and when the human version walked into the house on Thursday, he immediately asked where the dog was.

Cindy Murphy, Mikey's mom, said the player gave each family member a bag that included Bruins shirts, sweatshirts, sweatjackets, hats, scarfs and more. There was a separate bag for the family which had a few different Bruins games, the new book, a DVD player and more.

"It was so overwhelming and surreal," said Cindy. "It meant the world to the whole family but we all wished it was under different circumstances."

The family had a hunch something was in the works as they were told they had to be home for the day. That meant Michael Murphy, Mikey's father, had to make a trip home since he regularly spends nights and days at the hospital.

"The Bruins are the classiest organization around," Michael Murphy posted on the Wilmington Patch Facebook page. "It runs from the front office to the players and coaches. They have put a smile on my family's face many times since Mikey's unfortunate incident."

Mikey has had several setbacks in recent months with his feeding tube and has been forced to have multiple surgeries. He's moving his arms and legs a lot more and stares when you talk to him, but he still can't see, walk or talk. Doctors told the family they hope to release him from Spaulding Rehabilitation at the end of January, then place him at an intermediate rehab place in Billerica before ideally letting him come home.

Earlier this year, Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference brought the Stanley Cup to Mikey's hospital room and, thanks to help from his family, the young fan was able to touch the Cup.

On Thursday when Cindy Murphy saw Seguin walk up the driveway, she and her oldest daughter walked into Mikey's room, embraced each other while the tears flowed.

"When he walked in my house, my spirits were so uplifted," said Cindy. "I felt like a kid again on Christmas morning."
