Then: Main Street at Church Street

Main Street Wilmington has changed considerably since the days when trolley tracks still lined the roads. As a matter of fact, many of the locations that we, as residents, see every day are hard to recognize as we look back in time.

A close look at this week’s “Then” photo confirms that it is indeed a view from the corner of the Rte 62 Bridge looking North down the center of town on Main Street.

While many of the buildings are still standing the landscape in general has changed drastically and the trolley tracks are all but a very distant memory.

Today, a view from the same location features the MBTA train station and its parking lot to the left.  The first building on the right has been replaced and “Classic Upholstery” now sits at the corner.

Interestingly enough, one building in our older photo, the sixth on the right, or Hiller House, has actually been moved and now sits behind the Bank of America Parking lot.

I have very fond memories of Wilmington. I had relatives I would visit there in the summer and now my daughter lives in town. I miss those days and my relatives very much but it is good to see progress. I love Wilmington!

My family moved to Wilmington in 1961 from the city (Winthrop). It took me about 2 years to finally embrace the move, but after I did, I could never go back. Lots of grand memories are enjoyed. Big Joe's subs, the bowling alley by the Woburn town line, swimming in Silver Lake, slot car racing across the street, ice skating on the bogs, and playing "in the woods" everywhere off of Salem St.. Great memories with lots of my pals. I miss the old town.

The fourth house on the right was moved to Columbia St in the early 1960's - it is now at the corrner of Atlantic Ave and Columbia.
