Lady Wildcats Run to Upset of Wakefield

Wilmington cross country defeats unbeaten Warriors.

Wakefield's girls cross country team was undefeated in the Middlesex League small school division. Until Tuesday, that is.

That's because earned an impressive 29-27 victory over its previously unblemished foe.

Callie O'Connell won the three-mile race with a time of 20:06 thanks to a dramatic finish. The course finished on the Wakefield track and came down to a 100-meter sprint that O'Connell ulimately won.

"Callie's time was very impressive and she really showed some grit getting the win," said head coach Thomas Bradley.

Sydnee Russo was the second Wildcat to finish and the fourth runner overall at 21:28. Then, Kate Richardson and Keara MacCorkle tallied fifth and sixth with times of 21:33 and 21:47, respectively.

"They ran down at least five Wakefield girls and put us in position to win," said Bradely.

Like O'Connell, Michelle Barnes also had a sprint to the finish. It was a sprint she won, preserving fifth on the team and 11th overall.

The boys team fell, 44-19, to a deep and still unbeaten Warrior team. Erik Alatalo was first on the team and third overall as he finished the course in 17:01.

But the talk of the day was the performance of the Lady Wildcats.

"I cannot say enough about the effort the girls turned in," said Bradley.
