It All Comes Down to This for Wildcats [VIDEO]

Middlesex League regular season title comes down to last day of the season for boys hockey.

In a season with such tough competition from top to bottom, it's only fitting that the Middlesex League Small School Division boys hockey title will come down to the final game of the year.

Wilmington sits atop the league, and entered Wednesday's contest with a one point lead over Wakefield and a two point edge over Burlington. The Wildcats and Warriors skated to a 0-0 tie at Ristuccia Arena while Burlington thumped Watertown.

As a result, Wilmington holds a one point lead entering Saturday as the Wildcats travel to Burlington at 8:10 p.m. and Wakefield skates against Stoneham.

The list of combinations is long, but the bottom line is that if the Wildcats can topple Burlington they're league champs. With a tie, Wilmington can do no worse than a share of the crown.

Goalie Drew Foley was stellar in between the pipes on Wednesday as he has been all season for the Wildcats, stopping 26 pucks and earning the shutout.

It was a hectic final 30 seconds, as Wakefield had a pair of chances but were unable to put clean shots on Foley. But after stealing the puck in the defensive zone, Wilmington sent a pass towards Cam Owens, who had spun into open ice and would have had a clean breakaway with seven seconds to play.

But the puck slid just out of Owens' reach and fell harmlessly into the corner just before the final horn.

Scanlon, who hasn't been thrilled with his team's effort recently despite its 10-3-5 record, said the Wildcats' play against Wakefield was improved.

"That was tournament hockey right there," said Scanlon.
