VIDEO: Incumbent Miceli Defeats Sears in Landslide Vote
Longtime State Rep. Jim Miceli rolled past challenger Doug Sears according to unofficial counts.
Updated at 10:31 p.m.: After a long campaign, Rep. Jim Miceli used his victory speech to supporters for a parting shot to challenger Doug Sears.
"If you take Tewksbury and you take Wilmington, they don’t buy into dirty campaigning. I’m not going to be humble like I’ve been in the past," said Miceli, who never referred to Sears by name. "I’ve been in politics since 1963 and this guy is the dirtiest individual I’ve ever run against in my life. But the problem was he couldn’t find anything bad. And what he couldn’t find, he’d make up. We overcame that and I appreciate that."
In Wilmington, the unofficial results show that Miceli cruised with a 7,834-2,279 margin of victory.
Original Story: Though it was a race that featured plenty of heated discussion and accusations, it appears that it is Rep. Jim Miceli, D-Wilmington who will have the last word.
Tewksbury and Wilmington voters have re-elected Miceli to another term as the 19th Middlesex District representative in a landslide vote. He earned a blowout victory in Tewksbury (7883-3381). Precinct 5 of Wilmington was the first in that town to report with a 1,616-414 margin.
"It was a good campaign and a good fight," said Sears. "The people have spoken. They'll have Miceli for another two years. I wish him well."
Sears said he would continue to lobby for the issues that he campaigned on during the elections, such as smaller government and increases in local aid.
Miceli is speaking to supporters at Rocco's in Wilmington. Patch will have complete reaction as the evening goes on.

Now let's get this guy out of politics all together and vote him off the Tewksbury board of selectmen next year! I was appalled to see his character in this campaign and am even more embarrassed that the district now identifies him as town "leadership" in tewksbury.

Congratulations Mr. Miceli! You've always been a strong supporter of the people of Wilmington and Tewksbury and that's reflected in your victory. May you continue to represent us well.

Classic example of proven leadership defeating an unstable poor leader. Margins like this tell it all and Doug you should move on and retire. Take a cue from this vote and realize your baseless attacks were seen right through. Numbers don't lie, you are not the right person for the job! Good luck to you and your family in retirement.

TOWN CRIER TEWKSBURY, WILMINGTON THURSDAY NOVEMBER 2, 1972
Race for 25th Middlesex (Now 19th Middlesex) Representative
Editorial on the 2nd Race for Representative between
Democrat Fred Cain and Republican Jim Miceli
The incumbent, Fred Cain, is perhaps one of the finest legislators in the United States, when it comes to the art of "bringing home the bacon." He most certainly is one of the best in Massachusetts.
He is eminently practical. He knows where and how to get the money.
For the first time in a century Wilmington is on the receiving end, of state funds It has paid its taxes, through the years, now it is receiving
thanks to Fred Cain.
The new bridges in Wilmington – the doing away of the terrible Shawsheen Avenue bridge, the new Route 129, are no accident. They are tremendous improvements, and they are being constructed because the 25th District has one of the most practical legislators in the business.
Mr. Cain is a State Representative because some forward looking people of Wilmington, such as the late Charles Black, eight years ago asked him to run for the State House. They were right, in their
viewpoints.

Much is being made by his opponent of that which he calls his service to Wilmington.
He was, he tells the people, on the Planning Board for three years, and on the Board of Selectmen for six.
Not one person who served on the Planning Board with Mr. Cain's opponent has come forward to endorse him in his race for the State House.
Not one person who sat on the Board of Selectmen with him has endorsed him, either.
His three years on the Planning Board were three years of turmoil, and double meaning.
When the Town Manager of Wilmington finally fired him the Planning
Board was able to straighten up, and get some business done.
Mr. Cain's opponent spread the word that the firing was political. Two Selectmen were named as having instigated the firing.
The Town Crier kept out of the discussion it seemed to be a political question.
The Town Crier knows better today, these Selectmen did not advise Mr. Hennenberger to fire the man who opposes Mr. Cain. The entire Board of Selectmen had but one word to the Town Manager - fire the whole bunch!
No individual was named. The choice of the individual was solely up to the Town Manager.
The opponent's record on the Board of Selectmen is equally squally to that of his record on the Planning Board. Insults, twisting of facts.

When this person finally left the board of Selectmen, last spring there was an immediate improvement - and it continues to this day.
No longer is there any perpetual wrangling and twisting of facts. The Board of Selectmen, today, is worthy of their name.
Wilmington does not need that kind of politician.
It does need the kind of man that Mr. Cain is - an eminent and practical individual who is of utmost service to his town and district,
and to the people who own their homes in the district.

Doug Sears didn't articulate a vision other than being opposed to Miceli (whom I held my nose and voted for). Miceli is adequate at best, showed no leadership on the Wilmington high school issue and is a weak sister in the Legislature. There's a lot of bright and articulate people in our area, I onlyhope that a better opponent runs against Miceli next election.

Nah just kidding. I really have no intent on running against Rep Miceli or in politics anytime soon. To be totally honest, I just spoke with Rep Miceli this morning and personally thanked him for helping out a friend on mine who just went thru a rough time. Politics aside, Rep. Miceli does do a great job for his constituents. I learned allot 2 years ago running against him and it is something I will keep with me for the the rest of my life. I wish Rep. Miceli and his family all the best.

Mario, It's nice to see that you've gained respect and what seems like a little affection (maybe?) for Jim Miceli. He is a "good man doing a good job" and he genuinely cares about his constituents. I'm very happy he won. Mr. Sears has just seemed bitter from the get go. I hope he can heal.
