Hurricane Sandy: Wilmington Info Center

Updated Tuesday at 5:36 a.m.: Wilmington Public Schools are closed for a second straight day as a result of Hurricane Sandy.

Just before 5 a.m., Superintendent of Schools Joanne Benton sent out an e-mail confirming the decision.

"Wilmington is closing today," said Benton. "Wires (are) still down and some roads closed."

News:

Power outage update from RMLD at 3 p.m.:

"The Wilmington outage affects the following large area: Richmond, Shawsheen, Hopkins, Lake, Nichols, Dorchester, Kendall, Aldrich and all surrounding streets.  Most of the larger area will be restored by 6:00 pm with the area of Shawsheen Ave., Reed, Harold and Pouliot Place restored thereafter by approximately 9:30 pm."

State of Emergency:

  • Gov. Deval Patrick has declared a state of emergency for Massachusetts and called up the National Guard.

Service interruptions:

    Cancellations and Closings:

    • Town offices were open to being the day, but as of 2 p.m. all employees were sent home for the day
    • Wilmington Public Schools are closed Monday. 
    • MBTA service will shut down at 2 p.m. on Monday as officials urge residents to adjust travel plans accordingly. For MBTA service updates or alerts, visit The MBTA's website or follow them on Twitter. Customers interested in receiving text or e-mail updates may sign up for T-Alerts
    • E-mail your cancellations and reports from around the town to matthew.schooley@patch.com or post them in the comments below.

    Trash and Recycling Pickup:

    • Monday's Trash/Recycling/Yard Waste pickup will continue as scheduled. Board of Selectmen chairman Mike Newhouse told Wilmington Patch on Sunday night that garbage pickup will take first priority. Any yard waste that workers can not get to on Monday will be picked up on Tuesday.

    Since power outages are inevitable having a long run time flashlight is a good idea.

    Just got in from Market Basket. Still open with plenty of essentials and it wasn't too busy.
