Gym Demolition Up for Discussion Monday Night
During a jam packed Monday meeting, the Board of Selectmen will vote on whether to officially go forward with the February demolition of the high school gym.
Wilmington's Board of Selectmen has plenty on its agenda Monday night. But the biggest item is likely the state of the high school project and more specifically the scheduled demolition of the school's gymnasium.
The meeting is slated to take place inside Town Hall, Room 9, with executive session to discuss the demolition plans at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will open to public discussion at 7 p.m.
First on the agenda is Cuong Bui, who seeks a common victualer license to open Pink Melon Frozen Yogurt at 269 Main Street.
At 7:05 p.m., board members are scheduled to discuss the North Intermediate School window project, which has been delayed after being approved at Town Meeting.
After the status of that project is discussed, the major agenda item will be taken up at 7:20 p.m. Board members will hold a public discussion about the likely February demolition of the high school gymnasium, the first step in high school construction despite the pending appeal at Superior Court.
Following that conversation, selectmen are likely to vote to make the decision official, chairman Mike Newhouse said last week.
Communications items on the agenda include a letter from the project manager of the North Intermediate project, a notice of appearance to Superior Court regarding the high school appeal, a letter from Police Chief Michael Begonis about a violation by CTC Gold and more.
Selectmen will also consider approving several requests, including officially approving the license for the Wilmington Farmers' Market.

If the Board is signing contracts when there is an injunction on the project or will be, then they will cost the town unnecessary money and should be the ones who are demolished (by the voters)!!!
The students at Wilmington High School should know that this is extremely disrespectful to them. I hope there is a large student presence at the selectmen's meeting tonight to voice their opposition to this non sense.
The students and their parents will be paying dearly for this financial disastrous mess for twenty five years. I hope people have been paying attention to all the tax increases there have been since this project was first proposed.
Why is Mr. Newhouse not identifying the complete cost breakdown to the public at the selectmen's meeting?
Why is money being spent on another room to prepare it for physical education so the gym can be knocked down and waste more money?

Just curious why or how this in the Selectmen's jurisdiction? The Town Manager was granted authority by the School Committee to act on their behalf in regards to the new HS not the BOS! I think this Board is overstepping its authority.

Thanks for your question! From my conversation with town officials, it sounded like it was the Town Manager who wanted this to be a part of the process to ensure that all involved parties are on the same page.

There is a MAJOR lawsuit. The magnitude of which is grossly understated. It is the Selectmen's responsibility to protect the Town. If this goes forward I would be very surprised, but then again, the voters may have to experience severe financial consequences for them to vote these people out of office.

Did your third grade sign say that site workers, steel erectors, iron workers, concrete form carpenters are not tradesmen and do not have to go out for competitive bid on the Central Register? Is "the fix in" here? Would it be fair to say that on their best day Mr. Newhouse and his buddie Lou Lou are ,at best, are a financial disaster to this Town? Is there any intelligent life form that can't see through this phoney baloney?
What building trade or building profession increases there salary in two years by 250%. The design of the windows for the Shawsheen school cost $84,000 and the North Intermediate is costing $207,000 just two years later. This Town Manager and Selectmen are not fooling anyone but the foolish. I hope you make it through the fourth grade this year Joe m.
