It's fitting that the Wilmington girls basketball team finished the season right where they started - on top of the Middlesex League Small School Division.

The Lady Wildcats polished off a wire to wire run with a 54-47 victory over Burlington on Friday night that sealed a league championship for the team in the school's first year in the Middlesex League.

"It's really important to us. Coming into the new league it's great to come in strong," said senior forward Sarah Luz. "It meant a lot more to have the title by ourselves (instead of being co-champions) because we worked really hard this season, and I think it showed."

Thanks to the victory, the team finished the campaign with a 16-4 record overall, 8-2 in league play.

Division 2 tournament pairings come out in about one week, but head coach Jay Keane said the Wildcats should earn a first round bye and a home game.
