Election Day is still months away in Wilmington, but there is already at least one name that residents can count on seeing on their ballot this spring.

Lou Cimaglia’s seat is one of two on the Board of Selectmen that voters will be asked to fill, and he told Patch this week that he will indeed run be pulling papers to run in hopes of being elected for a third term.

Chairman Mike Newhouse’s seat is also up this spring, and several of his fellow board members said they hope his name will also be on the ballot on Election Day.

“Continuity is extremely important this time around,” said Cimaglia. “Change isn’t a bad thing, but where we are now with a new Town Manager, new Assistant Town Manager, and hopefully building a new high school soon, that’s especially true this time. Continuity is a great thing, and I think this board has worked well together.”

Cimaglia said he doesn’t necessarily consider himself a politician, but instead said he decided to run six years ago as a new way to contribute as a volunteer in Wilmington.

The former Board of Selectmen chairman said he doesn’t envision himself as a long-term selectman fighting to keep his seat for decades to come, but in the immediate future hopes to remain on the board.

Wilmington’s Veterans Agent also sang the praises of Newhouse, who took over for Cimaglia as chairman earlier this year.

“People don’t even realize what he does behind the scenes, how many hours he spends working for and with the town in some capacity,” said Cimaglia. “He’s an amazing man who does so much for the town that people don’t even realize.”

Fellow selectman Mike Champoux was excited to learn that Cimaglia will be running again this year, and added that he hopes Newhouse follows suit.

“The idea of being on the board without one of them is not very appealing to me,” said Champoux. “I believe the town is in good shape, in party because of those two gentlemen. We have a lot of change going on right now. Having a level of consistency among elected officials creates less possibility of things getting twisted upside down. I don’t think we have to go and fix something that isn’t necessarily broken.”

On the School Committee side, there is one name residents can already expect to see on the ballot as well.

Robert Hayes’ seat expires this spring, and he began to spread the word via Twitter on Tuesday that he will be running for re-election as well.

“Announcing my re-election bid to the Wilmington School Committee,” he tweeted on Tuesday. “One hundred fifteen days until the vote!”
