WCTV Announces 2011 Summer Youth Programs

Summer is drawing closer and with it comes the start of the WCTV Summer Youth Programs!  The WCTV Youth Outreach Program is proud to announce the start of our summer programs. These programs offer many ways for kids to have fun with their friends while learning about television production.

The summer kicks off with the Youth Open House on June 22nd from 5:00-8:00 p.m.  Wilmington residents can drop in at that time to enjoy food and highlights of past WCTV youth programs.  Staff and volunteers will be available to provide information about WCTV membership and details about the 2011 summer program schedule.

Students can learn the basics of video production in the one-week Video Vacation Program.  In this program, students will learn how to use equipment, work in teams, write scripts, and produce short videos and public service announcements. This program will run from 10:15 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. three separate weeks; June 27-30, July 11-15, and August 1-5.  This program is ideal for kids ages 9-14 interested in video production.

For more a more extensive program Video Youth allows students to produce their own television shows! Students ages 9-13 have the chance to learn the basics of video and TV production and produce a television show.  This program meets from 1-3 p.m. Wednesdays with different games, activities, and projects every week.

Video Teens features video production for an older group.  On Thursdays from 1-3 p.m. students ages 14-18 will come together to produce their own programs.  This program will teach camera work, editing, writing, and public speaking.  All Wilmington teens are welcome to come spend time with their friends while putting together a project they can be proud of!

Along with our summer programs, WCTV will now be featuring a Summer Youth Contest Series.   There are three separate contests students can participate in--the Music Video Contest, the PSA Contest, and the Short Film Contest.  These contests are available to all Wilmington residents ages 9-18. Submissions will be judged in a Youth I Category (ages 9-11), Youth II Category (ages 12-14), and a Teen Category (ages 15-18).  Submissions must be in by August 1st, 2011 to WCTV, 10 Waltham Street, in DVD, .mov, or .mpeg format and clearly labeled with the producer's name, the producer's phone number, the title of the submission, and the category the video is being submitted in.  Submissions can also be emailed to mryan@wctv.org.  Winners will receive prizes and will be featured in the Summer Youth Awards which will conclude the WCTV Summer Youth Programs.

In the Music Video Contest, if you know a local band or performer, make a music video for them!  Music videos must be between 30 seconds – 3 minutes, feature an unsigned local artist, and present an original song.

Public service announcements support causes and organizations that improve the well-being of your community.  Help support your favorite causes and win big in the PSA Contest!  PSAs must be between 30 seconds – 3 minutes, and feature a local nonprofit organization or promotes health and safety.

Have you made a movie and want it to be seen?  Submit it into the Short Film Contest!  Films must be between 30 seconds – 5 minutes, and feature WCTV-appropriate content.  (Refer to WCTV membership policies for full description on what constitutes as appropriate content)

The summer concludes with the Summer Youth Awards on August 19th from 5:00-8:00 p.m.  At the Summer Youth Awards highlights from the summer programs will be aired, end-of-summer certificates and prizes will be awarded, and information about the fall youth programs will be given out.

All of these programs are held at 10 Waltham Street, Wilmington, MA.  We invite you to come to the station to sign up for any of the programs. For more information, call 978-657-4066 or email mryan@wctv.org
